Religionless Christianity: Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Wisdom for Us

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was one of the most well-known theologians of the twentieth-century. Known by many through his classic work, Letters and Papers from Prison, Bonhoeffer struggled against Hitler and the Nazis, being put to death in May of 1945. He left a lexicon of concepts such as “the world come of age” and “religionless Christianity.” Jeffrey C. Pugh, Maude Sharpe Powell Professor of Religious Studies, will offer us perspective on how his thought can offer resources for people of faith in our age.

This year speakers from among staff, faculty, students and guests will be invited to reflect on individuals they would lift up as having made a difference in their own lives and/or in the larger community and world. We hope this will include world figures, teachers, friends, grandparents, community leaders, etc.

For those new to Elon or who have never attended Chapel, we seek to create a time and space to take a break from the busyness of our hectic schedules and to refresh the spirit. Chapel is not a “worship service,” rather a time of reflection offered by a member of the Elon community or a guest speaker. Make plans to take a break for a few minutes each Thursday in Whitley Auditorium for presentations by faculty, staff, guest speakers and students, complimented by live music offered by talented student & faculty musicians. Refreshments and conversation conclude our time each week. All are welcome!
