Students, faculty, staff, their families and community members are invited to join Elon Hillel to observe the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, which begins on Friday evening, October 7, and ends at sundown on Saturday, October 8.
Yom Kippur is the holiest and most solemn day of the year for Jews. Its central themes are atonement and repentance. Jews traditionally observe this day by fasting.
Services will be led by Rabbi Emily Jane Rosenzweig, a visiting Rabbi from New York, who was ordained by the Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles. Elon is borrowing a Torah from Jewish Life at Duke, and an Aron haKodesh (Holy Ark) from Judea Reform Congregation in Durham. Services are free and do not require reservations or tickets.
Erev Yom Kippur Shabbat dinner will be served from 6:00 – 7:30 pm in OAKS 212 on Friday, October 7. The dinner is for students, staff, faculty, and their families.
Kol Nidre Yom Kippur services will be held at 7:30 pm in Yaeger Recital Hall, on Friday, October 7. The service will open with Kol Nidrei, Op. 47 by Max Bruch, performed by Joshua Goldstein ’12 (cello) and Dr. Omri Shimron (piano). Leela Rothenberg ’12 will sing the traditional Kol Nidre prayer, accompanied by Dr. Omri Shimron. The service is approximately seventy-five minutes long.

* 2:30 – 3:30 pm, Oaks 205: “The Questions We Have: An informal conversation with Rabbi Emily Rosenzweig”
* 4:00 pm – 5:15 pm, Oaks 207: Afternoon and Torah service
* 5:30 – 6:30 pm , Oaks 207: Closing and Ne’ilah Service, including the final blowing of the Shofar
* 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm in Oaks 212: Havdallah ritual and Break fast meal
