Students host NASCAR viewing party at ACE Speedway

Two guests, including an Elon freshman, came close to winning a new Chevy as part of the program.

Elon University’s NASCAR Kinetics Marketing team held a viewing party at ACE Speedway for the Martinsville NASCAR race on Oct. 30.

Eric Carroll, Ryan Vet, Michelle Nadler, Alyssa King and Kevin Simon had been preparing for the event for several weeks. Guests were entertained with games such as Bingo, M&Ms Trivia, Cornhole, Remote Control Car Racing and a “Pit Stop Challenge” which emulated the tire change process in a NASCAR pit stop, racing against the clock.

Participants were also offered the opportunity to ride around the track in a racecar with a Carolina Motorsports driver.

Prizes were awarded for each event ranging from bags of M&Ms to $50 Visa Gift Cards to NASCAR video games. Two guests – Phillip Thompson and Lauren Tancora, an Elon freshman – came close to winning a 2012 Chevy Cruze from Dick Shirley Automotive.

“We had a good turnout out on a Sunday afternoon to watch the race and it looked like everyone was having a good time,” Carroll said. “We could not have done this without the support of NASCAR, M&Ms, Dick Shirley, the Elon University Fun Fund, and in particular, Brad Allen from ACE Speedway. ACE definitely added to the atmosphere of race day.”

The event allowed participants to experience the race track in a more intimate way, organizers said. Those who attended agreed.

“Before the NASCAR viewing party I had never heard of ACE Speedway,” said Elon senior Jackie Brockmyre. “After spending the day there, watching the race, and getting to be part of the excitement, my friends and I are looking into getting tickets to a race in the future.”
