Ryan Kirk publishes article on development patterns in Appalachia

Ryan Kirk, assistant professor of geography and environmental studies, published an article in the most recent issue of the journal Landscape and Urban Planning.

The study quantifies the changing patterns of housing development over the past 100 years in a Western North Carolina County and forecasts future development patterns through 2030. Given the strong population growth in the region, the article highlights challenges for rural planning and protecting mountain ecosystems.
