Elon University junior Will Brummett is one of 162 students from around the United States selected as a 2012 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact.
The Newman Civic Fellows Awards recognize inspiring college student leaders who have worked to find solutions for challenges facing their communities.
Campus Compact’s member college and university presidents nominated student leaders for the 2012 class of Newman Civic Fellows. Students must demonstrate a personal commitment to creating lasting change for the better in their communities.
Campus Compact said that Brummett, a religious studies major, demonstrated the type of civic engagement that sets an example for others by improving the lives of the residents of Eastern Tennessee via training youth activists across Appalachia. He has developed camps for community organizers and collaborated with other young activists in the Appalachian region.
On campus, he serves at the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement and the Isabella Canon Leadership Program. Across the world, he helped build and supply a medical clinic in Ghana.
As a Newman Civic Fellow, Brummett will join a network of Fellows around the country to leverage an even greater capacity for service and change, and will continue to set examples for their classmates and others.
“These students represent the next generation of public problem solvers and civic leaders,” said Campus Compact Board Chair James B. Dworkin, chancellor at Purdue University North Central. “They serve as national examples of the role that higher education can—and does—play in building a better world.”
