Catawba County (N.C.) Sports Hall of Fame honors Jim Correll ’72

Jim Correll '72, who has served as executive director of the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn since its inception 10 years ago, was inducted into the Catawba County (N.C.) Sports Hall of Fame during a May 14 ceremony.

He joined four others who were honored in the Class of 2012.

The Greater Hickory Classic has become one of the highlights of the PGA Champions Tour, a series of competitions for professional golfers age 50 and over. The event’s significance to the Catawba County community was underscored by Hickory Daily Record columnist Allen Haynes in an article that appeared in the paper’s May 14 edition:

“When we were kids growing up, would the thought had even entered our minds that a sporting event held in Conover would be on national television?”

Correll has served as a past chairman of the Champions Tour Tournament Association and has made an impact on the county in other areas, including co-founding the Hickory Sportsman’s Club in 1985 and the Catawba Valley Basketball Classic in 1987.
