Elon’s school supply drive returns for 2012

Elon University is collecting items to help 600+ public school students in Alamance County classified as homeless this year.

*****

The Elon University community last year donated thousands of needed school supply items to the more than 300 homeless children attending schools in our local community and students in a school in Afghanistan, where a 2009 Elon alumnus serving in the armed forces helped young children gain access to basic educational materials.

The Alamance Burlington School System anticipates enrolling more than 600 students for 2012-13 who will be classified as homeless, a distressing increase in the number of students with critical needs and very limited resources.

Once again, the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement, the Student Government Association and Elon Volunteers! are asking for help in collecting needed supplies for these students. These groups are issuing a special request to faculty, staff, and new students to donate back packs, book bags, school supplies and personal care items.

Elon’s partners at ABSS have also indicated that many of these homeless students need personal hygiene supplies as well, and such items are included on the needed supplies list. We invite you to participate in this drive as you complete your own back to school shopping or if you are an “empty nester” and miss shopping for school supplies.

Collection boxes will also be placed around campus until August 27. Law School faculty and staff members who wish to participate may drop off items in the Dean’s suite (Room 110-D).

In addition to book bags/back packs, the items needed are:

Three ring binder notebooks
Pencils (# 2)
Colored pencils/Crayons
Marbleized cover composition books
Erasers
Markers (especially washable)
Graph/notebook paper
Rulers
Glue sticks
Pencil pouch with binder holes
Highlighters
Flash drives
3 x 5 index cards
Blue or black ink pens
Shampoo
Toothbrush, toothpaste
combs, brushes
Body wash
Deodorant

Student and staff volunteers will separate and pack supplies the evening of August 27 with delivery to ABSS on August 28.

On behalf of student leaders in the Student Government Association and Elon Volunteers!, as well as the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement, please accept our gratitude and appreciation.
