DEEP Days at Elon University – Nov. 5-16

The Diversity Emerging Education Program (D.E.E.P.), an organization sponsored by the Multicultural Center, is hosting DEEP Days, a two-week celebration of diversity. In support of Elon’s International Education Week’s West African focus, DEEP is collaborating with the Isabella Cannon Global Education Center for this year’s theme: Celebrating Elon’s West African Culture.

Several events are scheduled for the program:

· Monday, November 5: America: My Second Life, 6-7:30 p.m., Lindner 106

A panel of Elon Students who have West African ties and faculty members Jason Aryeh and Elaine Turner will speak briefly about the challenges they faced when adapting to a new country and culture, and their experiences at Elon.

· Thursday, November 8: Servicing West Africa, 6:30-7:30 p.m., Commuter Lounge

The Ghana Periclean Scholars and Education for Liberia (www.educationforliberia.org) a nonprofit organization founded by Elon Student Kanree Wright will host an information session about each organization and the work they’re doing in West Africa. Come find out how you can get involved!

· Thursday, November 15: Africa: Beyond National Geographic, 4:15-5:30 p.m., Lindner 106

This program will tackle many Stereotypes connected to West Africa, and Africa as a whole. The goal of the program is to highlight the diversity of Africa as its own entity. We will do so by exposing the origins of these stereotypes we’ve seen through media and other sources, presenting them through an educational journey unlike any other program offered at Elon!

· Friday, November 16: West African Fashion Exhibit, 6-8 p.m., Elon Community Church

Come join D.E.E.P and Elon’s African society as we host the first all West African attire fashion exhibit. In addition to the beautiful clothes, there will be music, performances from our very Elon’s Finest, and most importantly Philanthropy. The event is free of charge, but there will be door prizes and the proceeds from these will go towards Education for Liberia- nonprofit organization that supports students in West Africa through the donation of school supplies, and school fees.
