Senior journalism major Christine Williams was named the first-ever recipient of the Jessica Redfield Ghawi Scholarship, which is given to women pursuing sports journalism/communications. The scholarship comes with a $10,000 award.

Williams has worked with both “Elon Local News” and “Elon Phoenix Weekly” during her time as a student. She also took a semester off to complete an internship with the National Hockey League’s Pittsburgh Penguins.

The scholarship was set up by Jordan Ghawi and his mother, Sandy Phillips, in honor of Jessica Ghawi, an aspiring sports broadcaster who died in the shooting at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater July 20, 2012. According to the scholarship’s site, “the Jessica Redfield Ghawi Scholarship Fund will endow scholarships to help send up-and-coming sports talent to reach their dreams through the field of sports journalism.”

The fund is managed by the San Antonio Area Foundation.
