The following message has been sent to all Elon students currently studying abroad or preparing to depart for the fall semester abroad.
As you have likely seen, the US Department of State issued a Travel Alert on Friday, August 2nd and has ordered the closing of several US embassies and consulates, mostly in the Middle East and North Africa. While most of you are not studying in the areas where diplomatic posts have closed, it is important to note that the DOS Worldwide Caution from February 19th remains in effect. This message is not meant to alarm you but to serve as a reminder that it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with your local security situation and make yourself aware of local resources available to you. While we believe that none of you are in a location that presents particular risk, it is nonetheless wise to always use caution and common sense throughout your time abroad.
We would like to take this opportunity to reiterate the information in the Travel Alert and Worldwide Caution and to remind you of some safety issues covered in your on-line orientation modules and discussed during your pre-departure orientations:
- Register on-line with the US Department of State Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)
- Follow the local and international media
- Be aware of your surroundings
- Avoid demonstrations and other large public gatherings
- Know how to get in touch with your program coordinators on-site and with Elon
- Keep your family back home informed of your whereabouts, especially when travelling away from your host city
