“Team Teaching India’s Identities Across State and National Borders” in Religious Studies News discusses some of the pedagogical strategies that informed the “India’s Identities: Religion, Caste & Gender in Contemporary South India” Winter Term study abroad course.
Assistant Professor Amy L. Allocco, Elon’s Distinguished Emerging Scholar in Religious Studies, published an essay titled “Team Teaching India’s Identities Across State and National Borders” (http://www.aarweb.org/node/1615) in the October 2013 issue of Religious Studies News, the online newspaper of the American Academy of Religion.
The piece, which was co-written with Brian K. Pennington (Professor of Religion and Chair of the Division of Humanities at Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn.), appeared in the publication’s “Spotlight on Teaching” section and was one in a set of articles focused on “Team Teaching at the Collegiate Level” (http://www.aarweb.org/publications/rsn-october-2013-spotlight-on-teaching-october-2013) edited by Ellen Posman and Reid B. Locklin.
The essay discusses some of the pedagogical strategies that informed the “India’s Identities: Religion, Caste & Gender in Contemporary South India” Winter Term study abroad course (http://indiasidentities.wordpress.com/) that Allocco and Pennington co-taught in January 2013. The course, which brought 23 students from Elon University and Maryville College to the South Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, was the first collaborative study abroad course approved by either institution.
