Ann Bullock named dean of Elon's School of Education

The associate professor of education from East Carolina University will oversee an Elon school with 22 full-time faculty members and five full-time faculty members from Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences, who work with teacher education programs.

V. Ann Adams Bullock, an associate professor of education at East Carolina University, has been named dean of Elon University’s School of Education following a national search.

She begins her new role on June 1, 2016.

Bullock has served as chairperson of ECU’s Department of Elementary and Middle Grades Education for the past two years, guiding its strategic direction and vision while supervising 19 full-time faculty members, two associate chairs, and more than 60 part-time faculty who teach and supervise in five undergraduate and graduate degree programs, 14 licensure programs and three add-on programs.

She has written or contributed to several books, book chapters and journal articles based on her research of developing teacher portfolios, conducting assessments of student learning and classroom environments, and preparing teachers for middle grades education, among other topics. Bullock also has made dozens of presentation at international and regional professional conferences over the past two decades and currently has more than $3 million in funded grants.

“Throughout her remarkable career, Ann has demonstrated time and again that the best way to prepare future educators is through collaboration,” said Elon University Provost Steven House. “She works tirelessly with her students, faculty, administrators and local school teachers to not only educate, but inspire, future generations of classroom leaders. Ann also has an entrepreneurial mindset, with an excellent understanding of teacher education and assessment, as well as considerable experience working at the state and national levels.

“I look forward to Ann joining us at Elon and doing great things for the School of Education.”

Elon University’s School of Education brings together 16 full-time faculty members from the Department of Education and six faculty members from the Department of Health and Human Performance, as well as five full-time faculty members from other departments within the College of Arts and Sciences who work with the university’s teacher education programs.

The School of Education enrolls more than 250 undergraduate and approximately 75 graduate students. It offers undergraduate and graduate degrees leading to North Carolina teacher licensure.

“I am honored and excited to be chosen to lead the outstanding faculty and staff in the School of Education, building on the exceptional leadership of Interim Dean Dr. Deborah Long,” Bullock said. “I can’t imagine a more energized place to be at this time than Elon University because of its bold, strategic vision with a focus on global diversity, and excellent reputation for preparing professionals.

“Serving as dean will provide me the opportunity to sustain existing partnerships while also working creatively to establish new partnerships and programs that will support the Burlington community, and ultimately expand the global opportunities for the students and faculty in the School of Education.”

In addition to her teaching and research, Bullock is actively engaged in service to her university and profession. She was appointed by her chancellor in 2012 to serve on ECU’s Student Athlete Academic Success Committee, of which she is a current member, and she has been a member of the College of Education Leadership Team for the past three years. Bullock also serves on the Teach for America Advisory Board in Durham, North Carolina, and as a member of the edTPA National Academy through Stanford University.

She previously served as a member of the North Carolina TEACH II State Advisory Group and the North Carolina TEACH II Statewide Committee, both based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Prior to joining the East Carolina faculty in 1995, Bullock served as an assistant professor in the School of Education at Winston-Salem State University and, before that, as a supervisor and instructor for both the University of Richmond and St. Mary’s College of California. She began her career as a classroom teacher for the Franklinton Public Schools in North Carolina, followed by teaching positions in Texas and California.

Bullock earned her undergraduate degree in early childhood and intermediate education from Appalachian State University in 1982. She completed a master’s program in educational administration four years later at New Mexico State University before earning her doctorate in urban services leadership at Virginia Commonwealth University.
