Hal Vincent, a lecturer in the School of Communications, attended the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (AEJMC) midwinter conference, traveling to the University of Oklahoma for the two-day event held Feb. 26-27.

The faculty director of Live Oak Communications, Elon University’s student-run strategic communications agency, co-authored a peer-reviewed proposal and presented his experiences as part of a panel discussion, titled “Entrepreneurship in the Advertising/Public Relations/Strategic Communications Curriculum.” Vincent spoke at length about Live Oak, highlighting its benefits as a space for engaged and experiential learning. Fellow advisers and scholars from the University of South Carolina and Abilene Christian University joined him for the discussion.

The panel was accepted as part of the peer-review process in the AEJMC Media Management, Economics and Entrepreneurship division. An Elon University Coleman Faculty Fellow for Entrepreneurship, Vincent said he was especially pleased to discuss the natural interdisciplinary nature of entrepreneurship and its place in an engaged-learning, curricular space like Live Oak.

“Elon’s School of Communications and Professor Lee Bush were really on the cutting edge when establishing Live Oak as a space for engaged, experiential education nearly 10 years ago,” Vincent said. “The student–run agency and its outcomes, one of which is entrepreneurial and innovation thinking, are preparing students for post-college careers. It is exciting to be part of this as student-run agencies are gaining attention from researchers and school administrators alike.”

Vincent cited published research by Bush, among others, and his contributions to an upcoming book on student-run agencies as evidence of that increased interest in academia. Peter Lang Publishing Group will publish the upcoming text, which is scheduled for release this fall.
