First-year student chosen as Newman Civic Fellow

The National Campus Compact named freshman class president Kenneth Brown as one of 218 Newman Civic Fellows across the nation.

Since the beginning of his time at Elon, first year student Kenneth Brown has actively sought opportunities to give back. His efforts were recognized last week as Brown learned he was named one of Campus Compact’s 2016 Newman Civic Fellows.

After winning the election for freshman class president, Brown took advantage of his position to examine additional ways Elon could contribute to the community. He became a mentor at a local housing authority, where he works with underprivileged children. This summer, Brown will serve as a mentor for Elon’s Odyssey Scholars Program.

Brown says that personal experience has greatly influenced his attitude toward service. Past support from his community during difficult times has helped him become the person he is today. “During these trials, people have helped me and my family,” Brown said. “So, why not help others?”

Campus Compact is a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents—representing some 6 million students—who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education to improve community life and to educate students for civic and social responsibility. Named for Campus Compact founder Dr. Frank Newman, the Newman Civic Fellows Award recognizes students who are passionate about making lasting change in their communities.
