The law school community gathered Dec. 15, 2016, to recognize 10 students who completed their legal studies a semester early while, in the words of Elon Law Dean Luke Bierman, “leaving this place better than you found it.”
They were Business Fellows and Dean’s List honorees. MBA students and dual-degree candidates in Vermont Law School’s Master of Environmental Law and Policy program. Moot court and mock trial team members.
They took part in the Honor Council. The Black Law Students Association. The Women’s Law Association. The Innocence Project. The Intellectual Property Society.
And they completed the requirements for their law degrees a semester early.
Elon Law this month celebrated the achievements of students in the Class of 2017 who are finishing their studies this fall before taking February bar exams en route to an early career start. Each of the 10 students were recognized by administrators who led the program in Elon Law’s Cemala Foundation Commons.
“There is no happier moment than to see our students graduate,” Elon Law Dean Luke Bierman told students and their families in a Dec. 15 program at the law school. “You’re going out into the world with assets and experiences that will help you succeed. You’re smart. You’re savvy. But the thing I really want to point out … is the importance of serendipity.”
Graduates should stay alert for opportunities that will take them in directions they never considered or, in some instances, even realized were availabile, Bierman said, adding “that’s what makes life interesting.” He praised the students for attending Elon Law and making the school a better place for having joined the community.
The reception featured remarks by law school faculty and staff who encouraged the graduates to make the most of their degrees while remaining connected to Elon Law as partners, advocates and investors. David L. Morrow II ’07 L’10, a special adviser to Elon University President Leo M. Lambert, delivered congratulatory remarks on behalf of the president.
“Be open to the possibilities a law degree can bring,” said Morrow, who found success in corporate law before accepting an opportunity to join his alma mater. “A law degree has given me a skillset that is transferable.”
