Volunteer for the Don't Trash It! Campaign

Need volunteer hours? Volunteer with the Office of Sustainability and help reduce Elon's waste!

The goal of this program is to collect usable items that would otherwise end up in landfills so that these items can positively impact those in the surrounding area. Items that are diverted from landfills are donated to one of six different community organizations: Allied Churches, Habitat for Humanity, First Presbyterian Church, Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, Helping Other People Every Day and Goodwill.

Volunteers are needed to help collect items from ‘Donation Stations’ across campus and bring them to a central location for community partners. There are three possible volunteer positions: item collector, food deliverer and truck monitor (truck monitors can bring their laptops/homework for use during any downtime). The campaign runs from May 10 to May 24. You can volunteer for a single shift one day, or you can volunteer for multiple days. The 2015 Don’t Trash It! efforts resulted in:

  • 10,080 lbs. of goods to Goodwill
  • 9 truckloads of furniture to Habitat for Humanity
  • 1,338 pounds of food to Allied Churches
  • 715 pounds of  sheets and comforters First Presbyterian
  • 4 truckloads of items to Hospice Alamance-Caswell

This would not be possible without volunteers! If you or your friends are interested in volunteering, click on the link below to indicate your availability. We hope to see you soon!
