The impact of Hurricane Irma in central North Carolina is predicted to be limited. However, rain and wind are still in the forecast, and all members of the campus community are advised to be informed about the university’s emergency procedures.

As Hurricane Irma impacts the state of Florida and moves toward the north, predictions for the Elon campus area do not call for damaging weather. At this time, there are no plans to alter the schedule for classes or events.
As of Sunday afternoon, the National Weather Service was predicting 1.5 – 2 inches of rain in the Elon area Monday evening with maximum wind gusts of 25-30 miles per hour. There is still the possibility of power outages due to downed branches and trees.
About 270 current Elon students are from Florida and there are more than 1,900 Elon alumni living in Florida. Following are excerpts of a statement issued by Dean of Students Jana Lynn Patterson to students whose families are impacted by Hurricane Irma:
The University community is thinking of you and your loved ones and are holding you in our hearts and prayers.
I hope that you have heard from your loved ones that everyone is safe. If you have not heard from them or need to establish a communication plan, I wanted to share some additional resources that may help you receive word that they are safe. The Student Life Emergency Response System (http://www.elon.edu/e-web/students/emergency.xhtml) is available to respond to all student emergency/crisis concerns, including incidents or situations that occur on evenings, weekends, and over breaks. If a situation is not a medical or psychological emergency, but you need immediate administrative or clinical/counseling support, please call Campus Safety and Police (336-278-5555) to access the on-call staff. The staff include the Administrator On-Call, the Crisis Counselor On-Call, the Senior Administrator On-Call and the Violence Responder On-Call. Campus Safety and Police will connect you with the most appropriate staff member for response.

Learn about communication at Elon during inclement weather and other emergencies
In the event of an emergency, the E-Net news website (www.elon.edu/e-net) will be updated frequently with instructions and information that will be vital to the health and safety of the Elon campus community. Any changes to the university’s operation schedule will be announced on E-Net and via campus-wide emails.
Elon University also communicates emergency information through text messaging, mobile apps, social media and more:
- Register for E-Alert, Elon’s emergency notification system, to receive emergency text messages from university officials.
- The Live Safe app, available for iPhone and Android devices, allows users to receive important broadcast notifications from Elon Campus Safety & Police.
- Keep your emergency contact information current by using the OnTrack system or visiting the Office of the Registrar on the first floor of Alamance Building.
