Student media organizations win big at state conference

The Pendulum, Phi Psi Cli and Colonnades all pick up Best of Show honors at the annual North Carolina College Media Association gathering.

The Pendulum, the newspaper of the Elon News Network, Phi Psi Cli yearbook and Colonnades Literary and Art Journal all won Best of Show awards on Feb. 23 from the North Carolina College Media Association. Several students were honored in the individual categories, as well.

The awards were presented at the association’s conference for college media students and advisers held at North Carolina A&T State University.

The awards contest included hundreds of entries from more than 20 college media outlets from across the state. Below is a list of only the Elon winners. (The place next to the names indicates where students finished in a particular category.)

In total, nine Elon University students attended the daylong conference, which featured workshops, panel discussions, critiques and a keynote address. The students in attendance were ENN staff members Alex Hager ’19, Ted Thomas ’22, Christian Galvano ’20 and Alexa Baer ’19. Representing Phi Psi Cli were members Sarah Stone ’19, Abby Weaver ’21 and Emery Eisner ’22. From Colonnades were Natalia Conte ’19 and April Roberts ’19.

Additionally, Elon’s Brooks Fuller, director of the North Carolina Open Government Coalition and instructor of communications, presented a session titled “Media Law Update: Covering Your Campus—accessing and using content.”

Lecturer and Pendulum adviser Kelly Furnas and Director of Student Media Colin Donohue ’05 accompanied the students to the Greensboro conference.
