Gender and LGBTQIA Center invites all to Trans Week of Action 2019

Beginning Nov. 12, join the GLC in celebrating the lives of trans people. The week culminates with a Trans Day of Remembrance Vigil on Nov. 20.

The Gender and LGBTQIA Center invites the Elon community to partake in Trans Week of Action 2019 from Nov. 12 through Nov. 20.

Trans Week of Action is a week to celebrate trans individuals, contribute to trans visibility, and remember the trans lives lost to anti-trans violence. As part of this week, information will be shared on how to find resources for those on their own journeys of self-discovery, as well as how to be active allies to trans people. To conclude the week, a vigil will be held to honor and celebrate the lives lost as a result of transphobia and intolerance.

Gender is a Craftstruct, November 13, 5 to 7 p.m., GLC (Moseley 211)

Trans 103 Training, Nov. 14, 6:30 to 8 p.m., Koenigsberger 125
This presentation reviews trans, nonbinary and genderqueer identities; specific barriers trans people face in society; helpful terms to know; and tips for being an active ally. Discussion topics for this presentation include: the social construction of gender and sex, model respectful language for discussing trans people, and reflect on how to use cis privilege for good. Note: attendees do not have to have completed LGBTQIA 101 or 102 sessions – all levels of experiences and knowledge are welcomed!

Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR) Vigil, Nov. 20, 5 p.m., Speaker’s Corner
As reported by the Human Rights Campaign at least 22 trans people have been killed in 2019 in the USA. TDOR is a time to remember those who were taken from us by anti-trans violence. The GLC will host a vigil and read the names of known and reported trans people killed this year. This is a day to reflect on our individual and collective responsibility to reduce anti-trans violence through daily actions and cultural changes. No trans person’s reality should be moving through the world with fear. Immediately after the vigil, the GLC will host a dinner in Lakeside Dining Hall for support and community-building.
