University begins ongoing random COVID-19 testing

Elon will be testing a random selection of students, faculty and staff each week throughout the fall semester.

The random testing for students got underway on Wednesday, Aug. 19, in Alumni Gym.

Elon has begun conducting random testing of its students, faculty and staff for COVID-19 as part of new measures to promote health and safety during the fall semester.

The weekly testing will be conducted of three different types of groups:

  • A random selection of students, faculty and staff who are potential contacts of someone who has presented with symptoms and warranted isolation.
  • A random selection of students, faculty and staff who have not been exposed to a sick individual but who may participate in higher-risk groups or in classes, organizations or residential areas where cases have occurred.
  • A random selection of students, faculty and staff from across the main and Greensboro campus (based on a stratified simple random sampling model with proportional allocations from campus buildings as well as student or employee status).

This ongoing testing, which is an essential element of ensuring the health of the university community, will be paid for by the university.

Student testing will take place each week in Alumni Gym during a safe clinic during which participants will remain physically distant.

Students who are selected for testing will be directed to a secure portal to reserve a testing time during a clinic that will take place each week in Alumni Gym. That testing will involve the same simple nasal swab PCR test designed by LabCorp and used during pre-semester testing.

Faculty and staff who are selected will be directed to a secure portal to order the same mail-in nasal swab PCR test designed by LabCorp and used during pre-semester testing.

Data from the ongoing testing will be utilized as part of ongoing analysis of alert levels in our operational decision-making matrix.
