John Bryant ’99 named superintendent of Henderson County Public Schools

The alumnus has been serving the school system in North Carolina as associate superintendent for administrative services since 2016.

John Bryant ’99 has been named the next superintendent of Henderson County Public Schools in North Carolina. He starts his new role Dec. 1.

Bryant, who has been serving the school system as associate superintendent for administrative services since 2016, earned a degree in English education from Elon in 1999. During his time at Elon, he was a North Carolina Teaching Fellow, Honors Fellow and a recipient of the Arnold B. Stauch Outstanding Student Teacher Award. After graduation, he taught English for four years at Southern Alamance High School in Graham, N.C., and then in Florida for three years at Apopka High School.

In 2006, Bryant returned to teaching English in Western North Carolina at East Henderson High School, serving as assistant principal and athletic director from 2007 to 2011. He then served as principal at Glenn C. Marlow Elementary from 2011 to 2014, before taking on the role of senior director of human resources.

An advocate for public education in this community and statewide, Bryant is a member of the North Carolina Association of School Administrators, Personnel Administrators of North Carolina, School Superintendents Association, North Carolina High School Athletics Association, Kappa Delti Pi education honor society and Sigma Tau Delta international English honor society.

Bryant holds a master’s degree in school administration from Gardner Webb University and a Doctor of Education degree in educational leadership from Western Carolina University. He and wife Lisa Bryant ’97 live in Hendersonville.
