Department of Performing Arts presents ‘Pheromone: An Awkward Olfactory Inquiry’ Oct. 1-6

Pheromone will be performed live for an online audience with the cast participating virtually.

The Department of Performing Arts will be presenting “Pheromone: An Awkward Olfactory Inquiry” by Rachel Graf Evans to an online audience Oct. 1-6.

About Pheromone:

Somewhere in a dilapidated warehouse in Atlanta, a new kind of party is just getting started. Wear a T-shirt for three days, put it in a Ziplock bag, bring it to the party, fall in love. What matters more in a successful relationship: biology or commitment? An awkwardly olfactory inquiry into the nature of attraction, betrayal and the quirky characters we meet in our quest to find true love.

Director Kevin Hoffmann, assistant professor of performing arts, notes in the digital program for the production that “Pheromone” is the inaugural winner of the Elon University Acting Program’s New Play Award in cooperation and partnership with the Hollins University MFA Playwriting Program.

“As this play is a fresh, new work in development, the playwright has been very involved in the production process, participating in casting, attending rehearsals, and tweaking the script for the digital medium – even writing a brand-new character for our production,” Hoffmann writes in the director’s notes.  The students have responded brilliantly to the challenge of being involved in a production that is continually evolving.”

Hoffmann said in the notes that the process of creating an all-virtual live production “has been full of new challenges around every corner as we’ve sought to take our existing knowledge and experience as theatre makers into a digital realm. It has required creativity, bravery, commitment and extreme innovation on the part of all involved to bring you what you will see.”

The performances will be Oct. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 4 at 2 p.m.

Reservations are required for the production and can be made here. A viewing link to the live-stream performance will be emailed on your reserved performance date. If you wish to access the performance on a second computer/device, please create a second reservation.
