Wisdom from an Elon Law leader

“One does one's best work where one is really engaged and committed.” Dean Emeritus George R. Johnson, Jr. praised Elon Law students and graduates while reflecting on his contributions to legal education in a video conversation recorded weeks before his passing.

As a young man, George R. Johnson, Jr. eyed the law and the pulpit as possible careers. That is, until his bride-to-be told him she wasn’t marrying a preacher.

Johnson, an Elon Law dean emeritus and professor who passed away from a prolonged illness on November 15, shared stories and encouragement for aspiring attorneys when he sat down with Professor Catherine Dunham in a conversation intended to be published as part of Elon Law’s recognition of his retirement at the end of the academic year.

Elon Law is sharing the video now in celebration of Johnson’s illustrious life and legacy to the university, the community, and the legal profession. A condensed transcript will be published in a forthcoming Elon Law Alumni News Bulletin.

These are his closing arguments.
