#ElonGrad 2022 spotlight: Alexa Lugo, vocal performance

In this series, Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences is shining the spotlight on distinguished members of the Class of 2022 from a wide array of disciplines.

Part of a “musical family” with a lifelong love of singing, Alexa Lugo graduated in May with a degree in vocal performance and a minor in Italian studies.

Her study encouraged a deeper love for vocal performance and a desire to continue studying classical music. In 2021, the N.C. National Association of Teachers of Singing chapter awarded her first place in the Third Year College – Classical Treble Voice competition.

Lugo was mentored by Associate Professor of Music Hallie Hogan.

What are your plans after Elon?

After graduation, I am moving to Southern California to work as an assistant artistic administrator for Opera Neo’s Summer Opera Festival. I will also be continuing to perform in my local theatre and artistic community.

What are some of the experiences or accomplishments that stand out from your time here?

I studied abroad in Florence, Italy, two times in my time at Elon. I did the summer Opera Workshop program in both 2019 and 2021. I fell in love with Italy and with the music I learned there.

One accomplishment I am proud of is the work I have done to make sure every student recital is live-streamed to the music department’s Facebook page.

What advice would you offer future students?

My advice is to get involved all around campus! The people I have met here have become my family. In my time at Elon I was the president of Vital Signs A Cappella and worked as the team lead of communications for the Maker Hub. Elon connects us all together. I am so glad I met all of the people I met on this campus.
