Two members of the Department of Nursing faculty, Jacqueline DeBrew and Whitney Hicks, have had their research abstract accepted for a symposium presentation at the upcoming Association of Community Health Nurse Educators’ (ACHNE) annual institute in Chicago in June 2024.

Jacqueline DeBrew, left, and Whitney Hicks at Partnership, which was a focus of their research.

The presentation, “A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words:  How PhotoVoice Captured the Structural Barriers to Health” will relay the findings of a community-engaged research project completed with residents of an organization that provides transitional housing to people experiencing homelessness. PhotoVoice, a qualitative research methodology, proved to be a valuable tool to assess the health needs of this community and give the residents a “voice.” Lessons learned from using PhotoVoice, as well as tips for using PhotoVoice with people experiencing homelessness will also be shared.

DeBrew has been a part of the Elon Department of Nursing since its creation in August 2021. She has worked with Partnership Village, the supporting organization for her research, since 2021 to build a community-engaged learning site for students, as well as a site for faculty research. Hicks joined DeBrew as part of her work in her doctoral program at Liberty University. Since doing this research, she has joined the Department of Nursing as a full-time faculty member.  Both DeBrew and Hicks have volunteered at Partnership Village, in addition to their time spent there in research.
