Alumni Bridges Program begins in Los Angeles

Four Elon alumni recently took part in a week-long boot camp focused on job search strategies and connecting with alumni professionals.

Recent Elon graduates interested in moving to Los Angeles, California, to begin their careers joined the new Elon University Alumni Bridges Program this August.

The program helps make the transition from college to career a smooth one by offering an intensive, week-long boot camp that covers LA-specific professional development and includes networking opportunities with industry professionals. The program is designed for recent graduates of all backgrounds interested in starting their careers in LA. Eligible participants must be an Elon alumnus, 26 years old or younger and a new arrival to LA. Participants live in apartment-style housing in East Hollywood, close to the major studios.

Associate Director of Career Services for Alumni Lasse Palomaki taught the professional development portion of the boot camp. Palomaki presented on job search foundations, job search materials, networking in LA, and interviewing and salary negotiation.

Brad Lemack, director of Elon Los Angeles, has lived in LA for over 30 years and led a discussion entitled “LA 101″ that addressed the positives and challenges, or as Lemack re-frames it, the opportunities of living in LA. There was a final workshop session so participants could apply what they’ve learned and begin thinking about their own next steps.

“I was genuinely impressed by the energy and dedication our LA Bridges participants brought to the week-long boot camp,” said Palomaki. “It was also fantastic to see the support from the Elon community in LA, especially from fellow alumni who generously shared their experiences with the group. This experience not only highlighted the strength of our Elon network but also equipped our participants with practical tools and confidence as they continue to build their careers in LA.”

Participants heard from Elon alumni at four lunch-and-learn events throughout the week. A marketing executive, story producer, social content director and production assistant spoke to students about what it is like working in LA and strategies for landing their first job. Participants also went on a neighborhood tour of Echo Park and attended a Dodgers game with 20 other alumni. Katie Kuczkowski, associate director of regional alumni engagement, planned the events with alumni.

After the boot camp ends, participants can have free, individual, virtual career advising appointments with Palomaki. The Elon alumni community in Los Angeles hosts networking events, group outings, panels and more throughout the year. Bridges participants can attend these events to strengthen their professional and personal networks in their new city. Participants are invited to the annual Welcome to the City event each fall as well.
