A research study conducted by Bill Andrews and Srikant Vallabhajosula, both Professors in the Department of Physical Therapy Education, along with Sarah Boise (BA Public Health, 2019) was cited in a recent Washington Post article.
Elon University Professors of Physical Therapy Education, Bill Andrews and Srikant Vallabhajosula, and Elon alum Sarah Boise ’19, had their research cited in an article published in the August 5, 2026 edition of the Washington Post. The article, entitled “Why Super Movers Have Healthier Brains – and How to be One,” focused on findings of another study recently published that concluded older adults with a fast self-selected walking speed have a lower risk of cognitive decline.
The journalist encouraged the reader to identify their expected walking speed based on age and sex by posting a link to a systematic review on normative values for comfortable walking speed in adults that Andrews, Vallabhajosula, Boise, and another colleague published in the Journal of Physiotherapy in 2023: “Normal Gait Speed Varies by Age and Sex but not by Geographical Region: A Systematic Review.”
