‘Don’t Trash It!’ donation campaign runs May 10-24

Wondering what to do with that perfectly good item you don’t want to pack? Donation Stations are set up throughout campus May 10-24 to collect donations which go to local charities.

Once again, students will have an opportunity as they move away from campus for the summer to donate usable items such as unopened food, furniture, clothing and blankets to six community partners. In 2016 more than 10,500 pounds of items were collected.

Students living on campus can drop items at the Donation Station in their residential neighborhood. Students living off campus, as well as faculty and staff, can drop items off directly at the Habitat for Humanity and Goodwill trucks parked in the Oaks or Danieley residential neighborhood lots. The trucks will be open for donations from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Accepted donations include:

  • Unopened, nonperishable food
  • CLEAN sheets, blankets & comforters
  • Furniture
  • CLEAN clothing and miscellaneous housewares, including functioning electronics

More details about what is and is not accepted, arranging pick-ups for large items and Donation Station locations is on this FAQ document.

There will not be a separate drive for electronics this year. Working electronics (with the exception of TVs) can be donated to Goodwill. Broken electronics can be placed in the ‘small electronics’ recycling bins located throughout campus.

Volunteers are needed to help monitor trucks and collect items.  To sign up for a volunteer shift of your choosing, visit the volunteer sign up form.  Even one hour can be helpful, plus volunteers get a free t-shirt.

Don’t Trash it was initiated in 2008 by the Truitt Center for Spiritual and Religious Life.  It is currently coordinated by the Office of Sustainability in partnership with Residence Life and Sorority and Fraternity Life as well as community partners: Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, Allied Churches, First Presbyterian Church, Salvation Army and Hospice of Alamance Caswell.

Anyone interested in additional information or volunteering to help with the campaign may contact Jessica Bilecki, assistant director for education and outreach in the Office of Sustainability at (336)278-5227.
