Elon hosts first Finance Mock Super Day

The William Garrard Reed Finance Center and the Porter Family Professional Development Center partnered to help finance students prepare for the interview process.

The William Garrard Reed Finance Center and the Porter Family Professional Development Center hosted Elon’s first Mock Super Day for finance students on Sept. 28.

Eighteen finance students, including seniors Ethan Feuer, Sophia Mancini and Nicole Cutler, participated in Mock Super Day.
Eighteen students participated in a simulated superday experience that included interviews with Elon Parents Council members Perrin Arturi P’21, Rich Brown P’19, Bill Burns P’21, Drew Levinson P’20 P’20, Ed McGann P’19 P’21 and Mike Schulte P’19. Also assisting with the interviews were Department of Finance faculty members Kate Upton, Adam Aiken, Margarita Kaprielyan and Chris Harris.

Each student had three interviews of various styles, including traditional, behavioral and technical.

The inspiration for the event came from feedback Assistant Professor Upton, director of the Reed Finance Center, received from students. “Each year I have a large number of students asking myself and other finance faculty for help in preparing for the interview process,” Upton said. “Many students are invited to a superday or on-site interview and have no idea what to expect. I thought having an experience on campus that simulated what that process is like would be invaluable for them.

“During the planning process, we realized we could also utilize members of the Elon Parents Council that work in field of finance, who are always graciously willing to share their time to provide meaningful interactions with our students.”

The initial feedback from students was tremendous. “Being able to interview with some remarkably established people in the industry, as well as proven professionals from Elon’s Finance Department, provided me with a simulation that was as authentic and real as an actual superday could be,” said senior finance major Ethan Feuer. “My confidence level walking into an interview now versus before having this experience is incomparable, and having that comfort and poise will certainly allow me to make a better impression.”

The professional development event was coordinated by Upton; Brooke Buffington, associate director of corporate and employer relations; Danielle Golinski, assistant director of career services; and Cindy Sweeney, associate director of career services.
