Hannah Strickland continues expanding music career with new single release

Music Production & Recording Arts student Hannah Strickland '21 is set to release her new single "Friends" on all streaming platforms on Friday, May 24.

Hannah Strickland, a sophomore music production and recording arts and music performance major at Elon, has been plugged into the music scene here on campus since arriving in fall 2017.

After being signed as a Limelight Records artist her freshman year & releasing an EP "The End of Our Days" that spring, Strickland has grown exponentially as an artist.

Strickland is excited to share her new single, as it symbolizes a stepping stone in her career as a musician & engineer. This is her first work that has been recorded and produced using the state-of-the-art console & gear available to her through Elon's studios in Arts West. "The amazing studios here are what attracted me to coming to Elon in the first place, so being able to work on my music in this space is unbelievable," she says.

In previous years, Strickland learned how to produce her music the hard way, with just a laptop, a cheap mic and a lot of grit. "I taught myself the basics and pushed through from there, learning the ropes as I went," she says.

As her songwriting and engineering talents grew in tandem, she began putting more music online. To date, she has released two EPs, one album and one single. Her upcoming release will mark her second single released to streaming platforms.

"My writing process has grown so much over the years," Strickland says. "I remember sitting down at about 7 years old, trying to force my writing into a strict map like I heard on the radio. But over time I've set myself free from those restrictions, and let the meaning and the lyrics shine through."

"I'm so grateful to have access to the facilities here, and the ability to take this crucial time to work on my craft," Strickland says, reflecting on her time spent developing this new single. "I can't wait to come back in the fall and work on more music right away – I've already got another great single lined up and ready to go."

"Friends" is set for release on Friday, May 24.
Hannah's new release, "Friends," deals with the struggles of an introvert trying to find the balance between wanting to be alone and the need for admiration from friends. "A lot of my songs come from a place of truth," Strickland says. "After starting from personal experiences, I like to expand it out and make it more captivating, more universal. But at the heart of my music, there are truths about my life, and the lives of others close to me."

Strickland will play a show with local folk band Love & Valor the night of her release on Friday, May 24, at The Oak House, starting at 8:30 pm.
