Frank H. Wu, the former dean of the Wayne State University Law School and a noted author on race relations in the United States as they relate to Asian Americans, will serve this week as the first Law and Humanities Lecturer for the Center for Law and Humanities at Elon University.

Tom Nelson, an associate professor of communications, presented a paper on the future of the book on Oct. 26 during the International Conference on the Book at Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

Susan Manring, an associate professor of management, has co-authored an article with Sam Moore in the Journal of Cleaner Production titled "Strategy development in small and medium sized enterprises for sustainability and increased value creation."

Frances Ward-Johnson, an associate professor of communications, has been selected as a fellow in the 2008-2009 Journalism Leadership Institute for Diversity, a year-long program which identifies, recruits, mentors and trains future leaders and administrators.

David Noer, the Frank S. Holt Jr. Professor of Business Leadership at Elon, had a column published Oct. 26, 2008, in the (Greensboro, N.C.) News & Record. The column, "How to resist spin masters," advocates the need for all responsible citizens to resist the spin put on events by the media and develop the capacity for reflection and healthy skepticism.

Kristen Sullivan and Cynthia Fair, both from the Department of Human Services at Elon, are presenting research on Oct. 27 at the annual conference of the American Public Health Association in San Diego.

An article by Catherine Ross Dunham, an associate professor of law, has been accepted for publication in the Winter 2009 volume of the University of San Francisco Law Review. Dunham will also be hosting a national expert on electronic discovery on Nov. 10 in her Civil Procedures class.

David McCullough, a two-time Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner, encouraged students, faculty and university guests at Fall Convocation on Oct. 23 to be avid readers and to seek from American history that courage and wisdom of their ancestors to overcome problems faced today.

“History” is not just what happened at a given time, but to whom it happens and why, said Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough, who spoke this week in Greensboro for the Joseph M. Bryan Distinguished Leadership Lecture Series. And not all presidents are exceptional, he said, adding that Americans should “count our blessings when a real leader arrives on the scene.”
