Students take part in inaugural “Elon in New York” program

Twenty Elon students are living and working in the Big Apple this month as part of the inaugural Summer in the City: Elon in New York program sponsored by the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business. Students are interning at major firms and nonprofits in the fields of finance, marketing, communications and entrepreneurship while residing in the Upper East Side of Manhattan and completing a professional development course.

Senior class makes gift to Elon

The Class of 2009 collected more than $15,000 this year to fund the Senior Class Gift Campaign Study Abroad Grants, which will provide funding to students who are unable to study overseas because of personal financial situations. Class President Danielle Durst presented a check on May 23 to Elon University President Leo M. Lambert just prior to Commencement.

CELEBRATE! profile: Ben Smith ’09

After switching majors from business to elementary education, Ben Smith '09 realized he would be a minority in his field. The questions he would ask led to his senior thesis, “The Difference in the Experiences of Male and Female Beginning Elementary School Teachers,” to be presented April 28 at SURF. His work is the latest in a weeklong series of E-net profiles to spotlight Elon undergraduate research during CELEBRATE! 2009.

Elon names 2009 Lumen Scholars

Thirteen rising juniors at Elon have been named recipients of the 2009 Lumen Prize, the university’s premier award that comes with a $15,000 scholarship to support and celebrate their academic achievements and research proposals.

Biology students receive honors at the North Carolina Academy of Science annual meeting

Faculty and students from the Elon Biology Department attended the annual meeting of the North Carolina Academy of Science at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C. on April 3-4. Faculty members Yuko Miyamoto, Michael Kingston, Jeffrey Coker and Linda Niedziela accompanied students Brian Beaty, Daniel Brown and Philip Zakas. The students presented their undergraduate research during the two day meeting.

Elon alum wins Rotary scholarship

Julie Anne Kenneally '08 has been named the recipient of a 2008 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship, an award that will help fund graduate studies on human rights issues at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. It marks the third time since 2006 that an Elon University student has received the honor.
