Manzano, who portrayed "Maria" on "Sesame Street" for more than four decades, discussed how her early life and pride in her Puerto Rican heritage influenced her life in television.

Manzano, who will deliver the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Address on Tuesday, Jan. 14, offers her take on a variety of topics in advance of her visit to the university.

Manzano, who is best known for inspiring, educating and delighting children as Maria on "Sesame Street," will deliver the address in McCrary Theatre on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

New Yorker cartoonist Liza Donnelly tackles global issues with humor, intelligence and sarcasm. Her latest project supports the United Nations initiative Cartooning For Peace.

Troxler, a recipient of the Elon Medallion, served Elon in many capacities across five decades and was the author of “From a Grove of Oaks: The Story of Elon University."

Wood, the author of "Uncensored: My Life and Uncomfortable Conversations at the Intersection of Black and White America," delivered the 2019 Community Engagement Lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The event was part of the Elon University 2019-20 Speaker Series.

Haley, the former governor of South Carolina who served nearly two years as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, is the first speaker in Elon University's 2019-20 Speaker Series. 

Among those visiting Elon next year are former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, Wikipedia founder and entrepreneur Jimmy Wales, Sesame Street actress and author Sonia Manzano, free speech advocate and author Zachary R. Wood and renowned civil rights scholar and Phi Beta Kappa leader Frederick M. Lawrence.

 

The April 11 event will be a moderated discussion about food, sustainability and economic development featuring chef Vivian Howard of the award-winning PBS show, “A Chef’s Life,” and Cynthia Hill, the show’s director.
