Religious Studies

At the annual Faculty/Staff Awards Luncheon on May 9, the Elon community honored 12 faculty members who are retiring this year.

Students in this interdisciplinary cohort will pursue academic coursework, undertake faculty-mentored undergraduate research projects, and participate in community engagement partnerships with local religious communities during their junior and senior years.

L. D. Russell, senior lecturer in the Department of Religious Studies, has been selected to receive the Kathleen Connolly-Weinert Leader of the Year Award from the National Board of Theta Alpha Kappa, the Religious Studies Honor Society.

Associate Professor of Religious Studies Pamela Winfield was selected for roles with the Society for the Study of Japanese Religions (SSJR) and the American Academy of Religion.

Associate Professor Pamela Winfield recently responded to a book panel dedicated to her co-edited volume "Zen and Material Culture" at the ASIANetwork annual conference in Philadelphia. 

All full‑time students with an overall grade point average of at least 2.00 are eligible to apply.

Thirteen Elon students traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, March 2-4 for the Southeastern Commission for the Study of Religion (SECSOR), the annual regional meeting of the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature.  Six of the students presented undergraduate research mentored by professors from the Department of Religious Studies, while the other seven observed in preparation for presenting in the future.

Pugh, the Maude Sharpe Powell Professor of Religious Studies, was honored in fall 2017 as a Distinguished University Professor for his scholarship, leadership and teaching.

An associate professor of religious studies, Allocco discussed her research on death rituals and gender at renowned universities.

The trip to India offered Pennington the opportunity to continue documenting regional heritage and revival movements and folk performances in India.
