Education professor sees government overthrow up close

Jeff Carpenter never thought he’d personally witness the overthrow of a government, but for the new assistant professor of education, a teacher exchange program to Kyrgyzstan in April was cut short for that very reason. The revolution had an unintended consequence back home, as Carpenter discovered, and it’s one he’ll share with his Elon University students in the years to come.
School of Education hosts Teaching Fellows program

Debra Briggs Hennelly ’88 named Stokes County (N.C.) Teacher of the Year

Debra Briggs Hennelly '88, a mathematics teacher at Southeastern Stokes Middle School, was named the 2010 Stokes County (N.C.) Teacher of the Year earlier this month. Hennelly has been working at SES, where she attended junior high, for 16 years.

Professor Glenda Crawford in the School of Education and April Post, a lecturer in the Department of Foreign Languages, presented their work, titled “Applying Ethnographic Strategies to Enhance Transformation in University Students through Cross-Disciplinary Academic Service-Learning,” at the 2nd International Conference on Education, Economy and Society in Paris, France on July 22.
Education alumni garner Alamance-Burlington School System honors

The Alamance-Burlington School System named Tyronna McKoy Hooker, a 2009 graduate of Elon's master of education program, its 2010 Teacher of the Year at a banquet on Wednesday, Sept. 8. Five other Elon alums, all chosen as their respective school's teacher of the year, were also considered for the system-wide recognition.
Professor awarded Fulbright for consulting visit to Asia

Elon University associate professor Bird Stasz has received a Fulbright Senior Specialist Award and will travel to Tajikistan this fall to work with colleagues there in the Ministry of Education to help modernize the nation’s teacher education programs.
