Writing for the Brand
Understanding the audience you are communicating with will help you choose the right tone — formal, informal, conversational, inspirational, persuasive, etc. — and select the attributes that are most important to emphasize. Knowing the intended audience also will help you think through what information is important to include, how it should be prioritized, and what supporting stories or details your audience will find most compelling and motivating. To write effectively, you need to be able to create interest among your audience and appeal to what matters to them.
The list below includes some of Elon’s most important audiences, and suggestions for appropriate voice, tone and attributes to use when communicating with these audiences. This general guidance does not cover every situation, so the staff in the Office of University Communications is available to consult with you on your specific communications needs.
