Types of Accountability Processes

University

Those who have experienced sexual violence, interpersonal violence and/or stalking can choose to report the incident to Title IX. The Title IX Office can provide many forms of support to survivors of interpersonal violence. One form of support that is offered is investigations, however, in most cases survivors can choose whether they would like their incident investigated. Investigations through Title IX are a way for survivors to seek sanctions through the university for the person who harmed them. If you decide you would like the incident investigated, you can have an advisor of your choice such as a member of the faculty/ staff, a confidential advocate, a family member, or legal representation.

In some instances, students may also choose to utilize the alternative resolution process instead of an investigation. Alternative resolutions are voluntary agreements between the survivor and individual who harmed them, and are non-disciplinary in nature (they do not show up on either parties disciplinary record). Possible provisions in an alternative resolution could be exchange of impact letters, arrangements for class schedules, or other provisions. You can learn more about alternative resolutions on the Title IX website, or contact the Assistant Director for Violence Response.

Law Enforcement

Survivors of violence can also choose to file a police report. To do this, they will need to contact 911 or the police department that has jurisdiction over where the violence took place. Those interested in reporting to police can file a report without initially pressing charges. Investigations through law enforcement is a way for survivors to seek legal sanctions for the person who harmed them. Survivors can request for an advocate to accompany them to meetings with police or detectives by calling Safeline at 336-278-3333 or emailing akrauss3@elon.edu.
