Elon
University students are testing the possibility of doing video production
work for the Alamance County Chamber of Commerce as a regular part
of the curriculum.
The Chamber
sponsors a monthly program titled "It's Your Business"
that airs on Time Warner Cable's local-access channel. Each episode
of the program highlights four local businesses that are members
of the Chamber of Commerce. For the past several years, Mark Hall
with TWC had produced the 30-minute program. In November, communications
professors Gerald Gibson and Vic Costello met with Chamber representatives
to discuss the possibility of taking over the show.
They decided
to test the idea over the following two university terms. During
Winter Term 2003, students in Costello's section of JCM 240 Introduction
to Television Production participated in a two-day production marathon,
shooting new episodes of the program.
Students, with
the help of Costello and Elon Television staff member Jay McMerty,
worked in two-person production teams that traveled to 16 area businesses
to produce individual segments for four new episodes of "It's
Your Business." The students also edited the programs, which
will air on the local-access channel at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays between
February and May.
During the
Spring Semester, Gibson's JCM 352 Corporate Video class will produce
additional episodes to be aired on Time Warner Cable in Alamance
County during the summer months.
"We see a partnership
with the Chamber of Commerce as a natural tie-in with the Corporate
Video course," said Costello. "Assuming the School of Communications
adopts a planned new curriculum, the Corporate Video course will
be offered perhaps as often four times per year. This would allow
us to stay involved in production of the program throughout the
entire academic year."
Local
