alum Steve Earley, a former Pendulum news editor, was part of reporting
teams that took two prizes in the under-25,000-circulation division
of the New York State Associated Press Association Awards.
Steve and other
reporters from his paper, the Daily Freeman, won a second place
in the spot-news category for coverage of a shooting at the Hudson
Valley Mall; this story was prominent in national news at the time.
Steve's articles in the package included a piece on the scene outside
the mall during the shooting and its aftermath and one on the media
circus inspired by the event.
In addition,
Freeman reporters earned a third place for a series of articles
on flooding in April - Steve wrote six of the articles in this award-winning
package, including the lead stories the first three days of coverage.
