Intended Audience: All new full-time faculty members; NOTE: Previous Elon part-time faculty who are now changing to full-time faculty status should also attend this session.

Representatives from the Office of Human Resources (HR) will host a New Hire Q&A for all new full-time faculty members. During this session, representatives will answer any questions that were not addressed in the online new hire orientation offered by HR.

This interactive workshop invites faculty and staff to explore the inclusive excellence connections between Elon’s Shared Responsibility Framework and the Shared Equity Leadership (SEL) model. Participants will reflect on their personal and professional development journeys, examine core values that support inclusive excellence, and identify practices to deepen their commitment. Through guided activities and dialogue, attendees will consider how to align intention with action in ways that foster belonging and well-being across campus.

12:00 p.m.-1:30 p.m. - Center for Writing Excellence: Strategies for Designing AI-enhanced Writing Assignments

Location: Belk Pavilion 208

Intended Audience: Faculty and staff who teach writing in their programs who would like time to work on, or get feedback on, their writing assignments and want to discuss how AI impacts their writing instruction.

We’ll start this session with an overview of best practices in writing instruction, oriented toward developing students’ functional, critical, and rhetorical AI literacies through the teaching of AI enhanced writing assignments. After this overview, faculty will have focused time to work on their course writing assignments and to get feedback on them from the Writing Across the University Director (Dr. Paula Rosinski) and Writing Center Director (Dr. Julia Bleakney). Please bring drafts and your laptop, as this will be a working session. To help us plan the workshop, please RSVP by Monday, August 18. Lunch will be served.

12:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. - Department Chair Workshop

Intended Audience:  This workshop is for all new and continuing department chairs, including associate chairs and individuals who will be serving as interim chairs during the 2025-26 academic year.

This workshop will be the first in a series of Department Chair development sessions for 2025-26. This session will include an overview of Title IV/VI regulations as well as a discussion of how the current administration’s enforcement of these laws is impacting higher education. Additionally, there will be several updates and training sessions on initiatives happening in the upcoming AY that impact your work as Department Chair.

Intended Audience: Faculty members interested in learning about the revised Faculty Handbook and engaging in conversation with Academic Council.

Academic Council invites faculty to join council members in an informal forum. The newly revised Faculty Handbook layout and platform will be introduced, followed by time for open conversation to ask questions and share thoughts on matters of faculty interest. This is a great opportunity to connect with colleagues, exchange ideas, and contribute to the shared work of the Elon community.

In this session, representatives from the Office of Academic Accommodations & Accessibility, the Office of Compliance, ECAN, and the Disabilities Advisory Committee will share how they collaborate to support and promote access at Elon University. Learn how cross-campus partnerships are advancing accommodations and access to foster a more inclusive campus community.

1:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. - Campus Safety - Community-wide event

Location: Lindner 208

Intended Audience: Open to all members of the Elon University community

Campus Safety and Police is committed to fostering a safe environment for all who live, study, and work here. Though police and security officers patrol the campus 24/7 all year, no security force can always have an officer present before a crime occurs. Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend this session to hear about the latest safety practices implemented by Campus Safety.

1:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. - Residential Campus Neighborhood Planning

Location: McKinnon, Moseley Center

Intended Audience: Residential neighborhood community directors and faculty directors, linked course faculty, living learning community (LLC) advisors, faculty affiliates, faculty-in-residence, and neighborhood association members.

All faculty/staff working with the residential campus neighborhoods and Living and Learning at Elon will meet to discuss neighborhood plans, the calendar of events, neighborhood programs and the learning outcomes for the year. This includes all residential faculty & staff, LLC Advisors and Linked Course Faculty.

 

1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. - TLT Training: Moodle 4.5 Overview Gradebook and Help

Intended Audience: Faculty wishing to explore Moodle Gradebook

In this Moodle-focused session, we will give a short overview of the new features of Moodle 4.5. The remainder of the time will be dedicated to drop-in support for Moodle-related questions, with a focus on setting up or troubleshooting your gradebook.

 

2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. - Becoming a Partner: Understanding and Supporting First-Generation Students at Elon - Community-wide event

Intended Audience: Faculty and Staff who work with students; those who work with students from historically marginalized backgrounds; those interested in first-generation student success

This session will provide participants with a history of first-generation student success, how we understand it as an institution and its implications, and ways to support first-generation students in classes and programs across campus. Participants will also learn about the First-Generation program at Elon, and how the broader campus community can get involved

3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. - Preparing for Sessions on "Being an Engaged Student"

Location: Sankey Hall 106

Intended Audience: All faculty who will be leading Engaged Learning Sessions.

First-year and transfer students will meet in small groups, commonly referred to as “Engaged Learning Sessions,” on Monday, August 25, from 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. and 11:40 a.m.-12:40 p.m. These short sessions are part of the First-Year Experience at Elon and intentionally occur at the pivot point from New Student Orientation to the first day of classes. The primary goal of the “Being an Engaged Student” sessions is to allow students to practice the kinds of academic discussions and activities they will encounter in our classes. This workshop will be co-led by the Core Curriculum and members of the First-Year Experience Advisory Committee, and you’ll receive information about both what we’re learning about first-year student engagement and ideas for preparing students to (re) engage with learning as they set out on their Elon journeys.

3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. - Sustainability Master Plan 2025 Information Session | Session 1

Intended Audience: Open to all members of the Elon University Community

Elon University launched the Sustainability Master Plan 2025 in April 2025, which supports the Thrive theme of the Boldly Elon strategic plan. The new plan aims to reduce carbon emissions toward Elon’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2037 and enhance involvement in sustainability efforts. The eight goals outlined in the plan address academics, dining, engagement, facilities, purchasing, technology, transportation and waste. This engaging session will provide an overview of the plan and help you identify how you can contribute to the plan’s implementation efforts. Attendees are encouraged to review the SMP 2025 prior to the session.

4:00 p.m.-5:30 p.m. - Advising Student Organizations

Intended Audience: Directed to any faculty advisors, but open to all members of Elon University

This meeting is for ANY student organization faculty advisor, new or returning. Discussion will center on updated Elon policies and procedures for student organizations and how you can help your leaders traverse the system. Additional information will be provided on how to be an effective advisor and student motivator, how to navigate PhoenixCONNECT, and on services available for your student organization. Join representatives from Student Involvement, the Moseley Center, and SGA for important updates.
