My passion for working in the field of human services was subsantiated and enhanced through my intership experience.  I was able to develop and carry out inter-agency research, extend my understanding beyond day-to-day services, and fulfill a meaningful role as an intern and member of the community.  The dynamic, energizing experiences from my internship have transformed my personal notions of human services, which I can now understand on a systemic, interdisciplinary level.  I can see this transformation manifestnig itself as I continue to define my role as a human services worker and explore complex issues faced by communities everywhere.

Completing an internship at Head Start was an experience that altered my life and helped me to understand exactly what I wanted to do with my life.  It provided me with insights about myself that I had previously not gotten or even understood.  I realized I was able to work with students and that I had a passion for teaching the youth of today.

The most meaningful part of my internship has been working at the ground roots level of Benevolence Farm as they plan to open their doors to residents.  It has been such a unique experience seeing the beginning stages of a non-profit organization and all that goes into forming this type of business.  I have been challenged by working with a population that I have never previously encountered, seeing first hand all of their struggles and helping provide an opportunity to move forward in life.

I have learned so much about myself through this experience.  I learned just how naïve and sheltered I was to the world around me.  I see a more clear direction in what I want to do in my career as a human service professional due to seeing the needs of the clientele. I found a drive in myself to help this population that I didn’t know previously existed.  Lastly, I feel this experience expanded and built upon everything that I have learned as a human services student.  It is one thing to read about something in a book, but another to see it in action.  This has been an incredibly meaningful experience for me that will change the way I do human service work in the future.

Winter Term Practicum
Crossroads Sexual Assault Response and Resource Center

I learned that I enjoy policy and how it applies in the field.  I find that administration and health care management are areas that I thrive in.  It was a learning experience to see the Macro and Micro elements of the Open Door Clinic come together.
