The Advancing Equity Requirement (AER) is completed through a 4 semester hour course that asks students to reflect on systemic inequity while seeking outcomes where all people can thrive.  This is a natural extension of Elon’s mission statement, which affirms that we prepare students to respect human difference and to be global citizens and informed leaders motivated by concern for the common good.  AER courses are taught from a variety of perspectives across all undergraduate schools and divisions, thus providing students with the opportunity to dig more deeply into their major/minor areas of study or to explore new disciplines.  The AER’s focus on identifying, examining, and challenging systemic racial inequities in the U.S. provides the opportunity for students to build the ethical reasoning and critical thinking skills that are essential for recognizing and addressing other forms of structural inequities throughout the world.
