A critically acclaimed film produced by Laith al-Majali '05 is now being screened in limited release across the United States with shows opening later this week in New York City and, by mid September, in Washington, Detroit, Boston, Philadelphia and Minneapolis.
Since graduating from Elon, Majali has become a rising star in filmmaking, fulfilling the promise he displayed as a student in the university’s School of Communications. In January 2008, he served as editor and producer to the film “Captain Abu Raed,” which earned the World Cinema Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.
The film tells the story of a Jordanian airport janitor who finds a pilot’s cap and uses it to share stories of hope and friendship with neighborhood children who believe he travels the world.
Majali came to Elon in 2001 as the university’s first King Hussein of Jordan Scholar. He distinguished himself as a campus leader, becoming an Isabella Cannon Leadership Fellow and Elon Ambassador, and joining the Intercultural Relations Club.
Elon University leaders honored Majali in 2008 with the Young Alumnus of the Year award.
