Academically Adrift: Limited Learning in College
(U of Chicago Press, 2011)

Sociologists Richard Arum (NYU) and Josipa Roksa (UVA) analyze multiple types of data to conclude that “American higher education is characterized by limited or no learning for a large portion of students, and persistent or growing inequalities over time…[and] many contemporary college academic programs are not particularly rigorous or demanding” (pp. 30-31). Their study raises many important and troubling questions, including: “If students are able to receive high marks and make steady progress toward their college degrees with such limited academic effort, must not faculty bear some responsibility for the low standards that exist in these settings?” (p. 5) This reading group will meet three times through the semester to discuss the book.

To sign up for the group and to get your copy of the book, contact Barbara Guy (x5100 or bguy@elon.edu) by Tuesday, February 8.
