U.S. News rankings, Elon University Poll data and research from Department of Economics contributed to media coverage of the university in recent weeks.
Elon University faculty, students and alumni continued making news this summer for their research and service both on campus and around the nation. Highlights of recent coverage include Elon’s inclusion in recent U.S.News & World Report rankings as well as faculty expertise showcased in publications such as Inside Higher Ed, the Christian Science Monitor and the Business Journal of the Triad.

8/10: (Burlington, N.C.) Times-News: “Elon director receives award” reports on Ron Klepcyk, director of human resources, who was honored for his service and leadership with the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources.
8/11: Inside Higher Ed: “Precision First” is assistant professor L. Kimberly Epting’s column on the need for professors to help students recognize the importance of accuracy and precision when writing over their desire to simply be “concise.”
8/14: The Buffalo News: “Gifted and talented stars elevate the otherwise lame ‘Fame’” is a review of a local theater production in which the writer lauds Elon University students and an Elon professor for “knowing the limits of the material” while giving the performance the “precision, care and respect it deserves.”
8/16: WFMY News 2: “Elon University Grad Students Will Debut Earth-Friendly Robes During Graduation” recaps a news release on Commencement gowns the university will now use that are made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles.
8/17: Associated Press/(Burlington, N.C.) Times-News: “Elon gowns go green with recycled material,” a story on the new Commencement gowns made of recycled plastic bottles that ran in the Times-News, was picked up by the Associated Press and appeared on news sites around the East Coast, including The Virginian-Pilot and the Albany Times-Union, plus various television stations in the Carolinas.
8/17: Southern Pines Pilot: “Remembrance of Enrollment Past” recounts freshmen move-in day for Stephen Smith when his parents dropped him off on campus in 1965.
8/19: (Burlington, N.C.) Times-News: “Elon U. gets National Science Foundation grant” covered a $1.2 million award to be used by Elon in the next five years to double the number of math and science teachers it graduates.
8/21: (Greensboro, N.C.) News & Record: “Heed the Warning Signs on The Road to Responsible Citizenship” was a monthly business leadership column by professor emeritus David Noer, who wrote about four emerging characteristics of the nation’s political systems that should be addressed to better understand civic issues. 8/26: (Burlington, N.C.) Times-News: “From 40 different states, new Elon students hit campus” reports on move-in day for transfer students and incoming freshmen in the Class of 2015.
8/26: Business Journal of the Triad: “Alamance County leads sales rebound with 9.5% growth” quotes economics professor Tom Tiemann on reasons for increased sales tax collections in Alamance County.
8/26: Business Journal of the Triad: “Private college hiring unlikely to offset public university cuts” includes figures on the positive growth of the faculty at Elon University in recent years as public universities in North Carolina lay off professors.
8/27: The Christian Science Monitor via ABC News: “’Flash Mob’ Crimes: How Good Are Police at Tracking Down Culprits?” cites associate professor Michelle Ferrier in the School of Communications, who also spoke with All Headline News, about traditional law enforcement strategies to be used against social media-drive crimes.
8/28: Boston Herald: “Would-be N.C. classmates salute slain Wayland teen” shared with readers efforts by Elon students to honor a member of the Class of 2015 who died in July 2011.
8/28: (Greensboro, N.C.) News & Record: “Battle takes shape over gay marriage” cites information from the February 2011 Elon University Poll and context by Mileah Kromer, an assistant professor of political science who oversees the poll.
8/29: Fayetteville Observer: “Same-sex marriage opponents stage protest in Fayetteville” cites Elon University Poll data as part of its coverage of a protest against same-sex marriage.
8/31: Mother Jones: “North Carolina GOP Trying to Ban Gay Marriage Twice” cites data from the Elon University Poll on public attitudes toward same-sex marriage.
Fall 2011: Reformed Judaism Magazine: “Admissions 105: Unexpected Welcomes” listed Elon University as a school that has recently “gone the extra mile” to make their campuses more attractive to prospective Jewish students.

9/13: U.S.News & World Report: “2012 ‘America’s Best Colleges’” lists Elon as the #2 Southern university and the top university in the nation.
