Assistant News Director – WSOE

Have a strong desire to report? Or maybe you have a particular interest in documentary work? Do you find yourself listening to NPR more frequently than you care to admit?

If this fits you, WSOE is looking for two qualified students to get involved with our developing news program. This could mean anything from going out in the field to report on issues to working in the studio to edit some quality news packages, to just helping plan and host shows and get sources.

The program is in its early stages and gives the student a good opportunity to hone their own skills at reporting and audio storytelling while helping shape the future of WSOE News. The assistant news director would have a chance to really be involved in helping the news program continue at WSOE.

Another position we’re hiring for is an op-ed contributor who would be responsible for putting together a short opinions piece once a week. This should be related to the stories we’re discussing that week and will be planned out in advance.

Full explanations of the position are below.

Assistant News Director entails:

• Compiling daily news briefs for blogging and radio packages
• Helping host the weekly hour-long news show
• Assisting in management of the news blog
• Producing content—i.e. possibly Hearst award-worthy news packages
• Cultivating media contacts for WSOE, and yourself
• Developing your skills in multimedia storytelling, audio editing, speaking on air, reporting in various circumstances and news judgment

Op-Ed Contributor entails:

• Writing news analysis blog posts (2-3 times per week)
• Putting together a 3-5 minute package every week
o Covering a topic of your choice: what are you passionate about?
o Incorporating interviews with students and staff
o Balancing Elon and national stories

FOR APPLICATIONS and if you have questions, email News Director Jack Dodson at jdodson4@elon.edu or General Manager Alexa Johnson at ajohnson51@elon.edu.

APPLICATIONS ARE ACCEPTED ON A ROLLING BASIS. When we find someone qualified to fill the spaces, they will get the positions. So the earlier you apply, the better.
