The International Living Learning Community in Zambezi House (Global Neighborhood D) took top honors this fall in an annual mural competition for students who live in Elon University’s residential neighborhoods.
The winner of the annual Residence Life Mural Competition was announced Saturday, Oct. 18, during the Homecoming Weekend football game. The winning mural, a Phoenix with words in different languages and flags from around the world, was created by the learning community’s 37 residents with the idea of reflecting the international focus of the Global Neighborhood and the ILLC, as well as its strong link to Elon University.
Murals were judged and ranked by faculty and staff on four criteria: representation of Elon University, depiction of the community, overall creativity, and quality of the finished work. Residence Life also gave special consideration to murals that incorporated neighborhood themes into their designs.
The annual competition is a Residence Life initiative in which students living on campus can paint a mural on their floor or within their community. Each mural is designed and painted solely by students.
The ILLC students, who live in the second floor of Global D, have a strong interest in learning about different cultures. Its members come from a variety of countries, including the United States, Japan, Nepal, Ghana, South Africa, India, Mexico, Switzerland and more. Their faculty advisor is Vanessa Bravo, assistant professor in the School of Communications, and a dual citizen herself.
