The director of digital marketing at Sony Legacy and Elon University graduate was profiled in an April 2015 article titled “The Medium: How Tom Mullen Took a Stand for Emo.”
For fervent music enthusiasts, particularly those based in New York City, Elon University alumnus Tom Mullen ’00 is likely known for one of two roles.
By day, Mullen serves as the director of digital marketing at Sony Legacy, a division of Sony Music. The position allows him to leverage the expertise he’s acquired during 15 years working in marketing and digital marketing at a variety of independent/major record labels and other companies.
In his free time, the Elon broadcast communications major also runs WashedUpEmo.com, a popular blog he founded in 2007 that grew into a podcast, radio show and DJ night dedicated to the late-1990s emo genre. These after-hours endeavors – what he calls “a labor of love” on his aforementioned blog – were highlighted in a recent Paste magazine article, titled “The Medium: How Tom Mullen Took a Stand for Emo.” Billed as a leading online destination for pop-culture enthusiasts, Paste magazine published the article on April 28, 2015.
The 1,500-word feature delves into a variety of topics with Mullen, detailing the monthly Emo Night NYC events he started, his interactions and interviews with musicians, where his interest in music began, and even his time at Elon.
Author Ryan Burleson noted that by Mullen’s second day on campus he had already joined WSOE’s staff. The opportunities Mullen had to promote his favorite bands as an Elon undergraduate “would open doors for his eventual 15-year-strong career in the music industry,” Burleson wrote.
In May 2013, Mullen shared his post-graduation experiences with Elon students, lecturing to music lecturer Clay Stevenson’s “Survey of Music Business” class via Skype.
