Shakori Fletcher '16 selected for communications fellowship in New York City

The International Radio and Television Society Foundation named the Elon University junior a 2015 Summer Fellow. With the selection, she will serve this summer as an ad sales intern at NBCUniversal.

As part of the International Radio and Television Society Foundation’s 2015 Summer Fellowship Program, Shakori Fletcher is one of 30 up-and-coming communicators who will gain 'real world' experience this summer at New York-based media corporations.
​The International Radio and Television Society Foundation has selected Elon University junior Shakori Fletcher for its 2015 Summer Fellowship Program. Following a competitive selection process with more than 1,000 applicants, the broadcast and new media major and Communications Fellow will spend this summer serving as an ad sales intern at NBCUniversal.

The IRTS Foundation’s fellowship program seeks top talent, selecting only 30 college juniors, seniors and graduate students for the all-expense-paid opportunity. Fellows gain experience with New York-based media corporations, while networking and undergoing professional development with key players in the media industry.

The nine-week fellowship program consists of a one-week “media boot camp” – an orientation to all forms of media, in which Fellows have direct access to industry professionals at panels, lectures, field trips and social functions. This year, the orientation schedule includes panels and sessions at CBS, The New York Times, Google, Facebook and HBO, among others. The remaining eight weeks consist of hands-on experience through internship placements in various formats of media. At NBCUniversal, Fletcher will serve within the Direct Response Group, an entity responsible for direct response advertisements among all cable properties, including Oxygen, E! Entertainment, Bravo and MSNBC.

“I am so excited for the opportunity as a whole, but if I had to pinpoint one aspect, it would be the exposure,” Fletcher said when asked what she looks forward to most about the fellowship. “IRTS is one of the most connected organizations in the industry; countless executives and top players from top media companies serve on the IRTS board and are very invested in the program. I am really looking forward to digging in and using the summer to learn as much as I possibly can about the industry.”

On campus, Fletcher – who is a professional sales and statistics double minor – serves as an intern in the Office of University Communications, a sales associate for The Pendulum, a diversity ambassador in the Admissions Office, an Elon 101 teacher’s assistant, and a member of the Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Eta Sigma and Omicron Delta Kappa honors societies. Fletcher is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

​Additionally, Fletcher has represented Elon both globally and nationally. She recently completed a semester abroad in Alicante, Spain; conducted communication research with the Imagining the Internet Center in Berlin, Germany; and served on the Elon Sales Team, where she was named first runner-up in the October 2014 Great Northwoods Sales Warm-Up Challenge. In the community, Fletcher serves as a public speaking coach for a program she created at the Burlington Housing Authority.

Fletcher is the only Elon representative in this year’s IRTS Summer Fellow Program, and she credits the opportunity to all of the Elon faculty and staff who have offered tremendous instruction and support.
