Faculty members from the School of Education present at virtual conference

Two teams from the School of Education presented research at the annual Council for Exceptional Children Conference

Assistant professors Dani Lane and Katie Baker presented a poster session entitled, “Experiences with the Special Education edTPA From Teacher Candidates and Teacher Educators.” This research focused on the views of teacher candidates (TCs) who completed the edTPA majoring in Special and Elementary Education. The presentation outlined the affordances and complications of the Special Education edTPA, a performance-based assessment, based on teacher educators’ and TCs’ experiences.

Associate professor Scott Morrison and Lumen Scholar Kelly Hunter ’21 presented a poster session entitled, “Exceptional Plans for Exceptional Students: Understanding Emergency Crisis Policies and Procedures.” Their research explored the challenges students with disabilities may experience during real or simulated school crisis situations. Their data suggest that classroom teachers and special educators are not prepared enough and are not receiving specific training to support exceptional children during school crisis situations even though almost all of them have experienced such situations.
